Promoting Mental Peace: How to Embrace Mindfulness

In today’s fast-paced world, people hardly get any time to take care of their health. It seems like everybody is competing in a never-ending marathon, trying to overrun the others. The emotions like jealousy, resentment, greed, and envy have become quite prevalent. People have lost an essential element we call ‘mental peace’. Mental peace is inner satisfaction that brings calm and tranquility to an individual’s life.  The good news is that anybody can achieve mental peace if they learn the secrets of mindfulness.

Mindfulness is one of the methods of meditation. Meditation is about focusing your attention on your inner self and raising awareness of who you are. It requires focusing as you breathe in and out. Meanwhile, it provides the opportunity to observe your thoughts as they arise and teaches you to let go of the unnecessary thoughts. You develop an understanding that it is in your control whether to act out your thoughts or not. Mindfulness meditation allows you to develop compassion for yourself and avoid self-criticism. According to a meta-analysis, a mindfulness-based stress reduction program can alleviate people’s suffering having psychological problems. The greater awareness brought about by mindfulness reduces negative emotions and improves people’s coping ability (Grossman, Niemann, Schmidt & Walach, 2004). Another study found that mindfulness has a significant role in promoting psychological well-being by increasing self-regulation and positive emotional states. In cancer patients, mindfulness has been found to alleviate mood disturbances and stress levels (Brown & Ryan, 2003).

According to mindfulness-to-meaning theory, mindfulness transcends individuals from a stress appraisal state to a meta-cognitive state, ultimately providing a sense of meaning in difficult circumstances. It directs attention to the essential pieces of information that remained unnoticed previously. That way, mindfulness provides an opportunity to reappraise the distressing situation, which alleviates distress and promotes positive emotions (Garland, Farb, Goldin & Fredrickson, 2015).

Mental peace is not about the absence of stress but maintaining a calm physical and psychological state even in the presence of stressors. Mindfulness regulates our psychological, physical, and emotional states, which keeps us calm despite the presence of stressors. It also helps us to rethink the distressing situation from a different perspective. In this way, mindfulness helps in promoting mental peace. To achieve mental peace, it is important to embrace mindfulness by manoeuvering social connectivity and emotional regulation.

Emotional regulation

Keep a check on your emotions. Try to remain calm in difficult situations. Increased awareness of your thoughts can help you get an objective impression of your emotional expression. It is vital to master the emotional balance to embrace mindfulness.

Social Connections

To develop healthy social relationships, an awareness of the needs of others is essential. You need to pay attention to the cues while dealing with others to be aware of their needs and wants. The increased awareness will assist you in embracing mindfulness.
